Pre-emergent herbicide typically comes in two different forms: liquid pre-emergent and granule pre-emergent. While each type is structured to combat sprouting weeds, they each have unique characteristics and application methods.

– Liquid pre-emergents are usually sprayed with tank sprayers or hose connections. One benefit of this pre-emergent is its widespread application, as its fast flow rate causes it to evenly coat your lawn. 

– Granular pre-emergents require little to no mixing compared to their liquid counterpart, which makes preparation a little easier.

Timing when you apply the pre-emergent herbicide is very important. Crabgrass seeds germinate when soil temperatures at the surface are consistently at 55F for 4 to 5 days. Pre-emergent herbicide works by interfering with the seed’s ability to germinate. Therefore, pre-emergent herbicide must be applied before the soil temperatures are right for crabgrass germination. Early spring is the time when we start the complete application.

Once pre-emergent is applied, water your lawn carefully to activate the herbicide and encourage its penetration into the soil. Aim for 1 inch of water per week, either through rainfall or irrigation, to maintain optimal moisture levels without over-saturating the soil.

In Virginia, we typically deal with a variety of weeds, including broadleaf weeds, grassy weeds, and sedges. Here are some of the most common ones:
Broadleaf Weeds: These include bittercress, dandelions, clover, chickweed, plantain, and spurge. They have wide leaves and can spread quickly if not controlled.
Grassy Weeds: These resemble turfgrass and can be harder to spot. Common ones are crabgrass, goosegrass, japanese stiltgrass, and foxtail. They compete with your lawn for nutrients and space.
Sedges: Nutsedge, also known as nutgrass, is a persistent and fast-spreading weed that thrives in moist soil. It has a distinct triangular stem and can be tough to eliminate.
Effective treatment involves pre-emergent herbicides to prevent germination, post-emergent treatments for active weeds, and proper lawn maintenance to promote thick, healthy grass that naturally crowds out weeds.
Typically, our weed control treatments are applied at intervals of 6 to 8 weeks. However, to maximize effectiveness, we occasionally shorten this timeframe. For particularly persistent grassy weeds, treatments may be scheduled as frequently as every 20 days to ensure thorough eradication.
